This week there is much to look forward to – it is going to mark Canada’s very first National Fiddling Day.
I am honoured to have been asked by the Canadian Grand Masters organization to appear along side many talented fiddlers on Parliament Hill Wednesday afternoon. We are to perform for MPs and Senators and staff as part of an old time kitchen party reception – except the kitchen is going to be the courtyard of the East Block! I look forward to seeing Senator Elizabeth Hubley again and playing in front of Parliamentarians (read about the last time I was with the Senator – when I played for MPs).
Then on Saturday, I will join with Ottawa area fiddlers on the banks of the Ottawa River to commemorate our country’s inaugural National Fiddling Day. Here are the details for anybody who wishes to join us or to witness this spectacle.
An hour’s fiddle session on Saturday May 16th from 10 – 11 a.m. at Woodroffe Park along the Parkway (at Deschenes Rapids). Fiddlers will play with the beauty of the Ottawa River serving as their backdrop.
Later on Saturday, I will be in Richmond at another fiddling performance to mark National Fiddling Day as well as to appear in my first competition of 2015. I will be competing at the Ottawa Fiddle and Stepdance Competition in the 18 and under fiddle category (this is in the evening portion of the program starting at 6:30 p.m.). I am also pleased to be competing that evening in the twin fiddle category with my friend Marley Mullan. (Click here for a direct link to the competition’s website with the program and competition details – Ottawa Fiddle and Stepdance Competition).
Check back here in the coming week for photos from Parliament Hill, the Ottawa River session and at the Ottawa competition event.
P.S. – I would also like to put a plug in for Dennis Harrington, host of the Cross-Canada Fiddling Shows on 98.7 Valley Heritage Radio in Renfrew. He is hosting a special live show on Saturday from 1 – 2 p.m. to showcase Ottawa Valley musical talent. I will not be at the radio station as I will be on my way to Richmond at the time – but will certainly be tuning into this show – 98.7 on your FM dial! – or click here to stream it live over the Internet: http://valleyheritageradio.ca/listen-live/
